Watch Meek Mill's first interview since leaving prison

Rapper Meek Mill won freedom from prison on Tuesday after an unusually harsh sentence triggered protests that pointed to racial biases in United States probation laws.

"I got a lot of important people depending on me", he told Holt.

"In the meantime, I plan to work closely with my legal team to overturn this unwarranted conviction and look forward to reuniting with my family and resuming my music career", said Mill, whose last album Wins and Losses reached number three on the USA chart. This will mark Meek's first interview since the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ordered his release from a state prison. Upon release, Mill was immediately rushed off to the 76ers game, where he was joined by the team's co-owner Michael Rubin, comedian/actor Kevin Hart and Gov. Wolf. On social media, the recently-freed musician released the following statement to his fans and followers in connection to this ongoing trail.

The "Save Me" rapper opened up to Lester Holt about his recent stint in jail on "NBC Nightly News" for an upcoming "Dateline" special.

Meek Mill's prison sentence was originally two to four years. I ain't feel free since I caught this case at the age of 19.

The rapper said he's been experiencing a bit of a "culture shock" while transitioning back to reality after spending the last five months in a cell in a Chester County prison.

In an opinion earlier this month, Judge Genece Brinkley, who sent Mill to prison for the probation violations, defended herself against accusations by the defence that she was waging a vendetta against the rapper. "I understand that many people of colour across the country don't have that luxury and I plan to use my platform to shine a light on those issues", he tweeted.

"And not talking about them people, the public officials", he said.

He said he would focus his attention on getting his convictions overturned, and that he looks forward to resuming his music career. Mill rang the ceremonial Liberty Bell before the match between the 76ers and the Miami Heat that evening, which the 76ers won.
