Parents of Alfie Evans 'heartbroken' after son passes away

Alfie Evans, the 23-month-old toddler with a degenerative brain condition, whose case sparked not only a High Court legal battle but also a wave of solidarity around the world, has died, almost a week after his life support was withdrawn.

The 23-month-old child had an incurable degenerative brain condition and was at the center of a controversial legal battle over his treatment.

"Our baby grew his wings tonight at 2:30am (0130 GMT)".

'We are heart broken. "Thankyou everyone for all your support", his mother, Kate James, posted on the "Alfies Army Official" Facebook page.

In an Orwellian turn of events, High Court Justice Anthony Hayden ruled that it was "in Alfie's best interest" for him to "conclude his life, as he has lived it, with dignity".

Ms Lowery's touching tributes has added to the thousands that have flooded in for Alfie Evans, who passed away at 2.30am at Alder Hey's Children's Hospital in Liverpool.

In a statement, Alder Hey wrote: 'We wish to express our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to Alfie's family at this extremely distressing time.

"This has been a devastating journey for them", the hospital said.

His father, who has been consistent and vocal about the legal battle for his son's continuing health aid, shared to Facebook on Saturday morning confirmation of Alfie's passing.

The boy had his life support withdrawn on Monday after being in a semi-vegetative state for more than a year.

Pope Francis tweeted he was "deeply moved" to learn Alfie had died.

Alfie was admitted to Alder Hey Hospital in December 2016. "Today i pray especially for his parents, as God the Father receives him into his tender embrace".

At a hearing in February the hospital's lawyers argued that Evans had suffered "catastrophic degradation of his brain tissue" and said Italian doctors who visited the child were agreed on the "futility" of trying to find a cure.

"The only master of life, from the beginning to its natural end, is God, and our duty is to do everything to protect life", he said.

Earlier in April, Evans pleaded with him to "save our son" during a meeting in Rome. His parents also demanded from the authorities not to disconnect the child from life support.

The case stirred strong feelings over whether judges, doctors or parents have the right to decide on a child's life. Hundreds of people gathered that day in the hospital and tried to storm the building.

In a statement posted Thursday on Facebook, Evans thanked hospital staff "at every level for their dignity and professionalism during what must be an incredibly hard time for them too".

As a result of Alfie's unresponsiveness to active treatment, the hospital suggested that he be taken off life support.
