Brabham unveils £1m, 700bhp track auto called the BT62

The BT62's base price is £1 million ($1.36 million) plus taxes and fees, and before options, with production limited to 70 cars in recognition of the 70-year heritages since Jack Brabham's Australian competition debut in 1948.

According Brabham Automotive, the BT62 has a 41/59 front-to-rear weight ratio, and its adjustable rear wing can generate up to 1200kg of downforce.

The body is lightweight carbon fibre and endowed with an aggressive aerodynamic package and a set of Michelin racing slicks, with carbon/carbon six-piston brakes all round and power going to the back wheels through a rear-mounted race spec gearbox. David Brabham, himself an accomplished Le Mans racer, still heads the company, which says it has a phased product development program and long-term plan in place to continue manufacture through the BT62 and beyond.

Inside, the BT62 features a full roll cage, racing bucket seats upholstered in Alcantara, a fully digital driver display and an F1-inspired steering wheel filled with buttons and switches to control a range of vehicle functions.

The BT62 unveiled was liveried to celebrate Jack Brabham's green-and-gold BT19 and his historic victory at the 1966 French Formula 1 Grand Prix at Reims, the year in which he made history in becoming the first (and to date only) driver to win a World Championship in a vehicle of his own construction.

InDaily provides valuable, local independent journalism in South Australia.

The first 35 cars will be liveried to reflect each of the grand prix team's 35 world championship race wins.

After some fits and starts, the Brabham name is back in business as a race auto manufacturer with the debut of the awesome little BT62. The exhibition will now be opened to the public (by ticket only). The squad experienced a resurgence in the 1980s, in part thanks to star designer Gordon Murray, with Nelson Piquet winning drivers' titles in 1981 and 1983. It changed hands several times after that, eventually folding after the 1992 season, when owner Middlebridge Group Ltd hit financial trouble. The auto sits on Michelin racing slick tyres. A nicely resolved - if somewhat generic - design, with more than a hint of Jaguar C-X75 about the front end, the BT62 certainly appears to be a worthy successor to Brabhams of yore.
