Google Assistant on Wear OS now issues voice responses, offers smart suggestions

Google Home launched in late 2016 to compete with Amazon's Echo smart speaker line.

Google on Thursday touted that its Google Assistant is now available on more than 5,000 smart home devices, up from the 1,500 devices that were supported back in January. These Actions are now ready on all Wear OS by Google devices so you can do more wherever you are.

Other useful additions include more security brands, like ADT, First Alert, and Vivin Smart Home, smart door locks from August and Schlage, and home security cameras from Panasonic and Arlo. Earlier this year, an Amazon representative said Alexa works with about 12,000 devices.

Not all the companies make products that are directly consumer-facing: Botsociety, a San Francisco company that offers tools to quickly design and test voice interfaces and text chatbots is also among the companies named by Google. Unlike Google Home, however, there's nothing special about this routine, and you can easily customize it or delete it altogether if you prefer.

Then comes Actions, which are basically things you can do using Assistant. Added to smart speakers in March, it allows multiple tasks - like turning on or off connected lights, get live information from services like public transit schedules, and even controlling smart appliances - to be triggered with a single voice command.

Once you've established the when, it's time to choose the what.

The challenge is on as Facebook not only struggles with its privacy problems but also takes on an already busy smart speaker market with well established speakers and artificial assistants already in place. This collaboration with the voice-based devices will provide them just that.

The new functionalities are being rolled out incrementally, so you might not see them go live on your device just yet.

Alexa, can you talk like Yoda?
