Cowboys' Witten retires to take 'Monday Night Football' job

Witten leaves the Cowboys after 15 seasons as the team's starting tight end.

In addition to weighing an offer from ESPN's Monday Night Football, another network made an "interesting" last minute proposal to the soon-to-be 36-year-old, ESPN announced, without divulging the name of the other network.

The career Cowboy informed owner Jerry Jones and head coach Jason Garrett after struggling with the decision, multiple sources told Archer.

The Cowboys drafted Witten in the third round of the 2003 NFL Draft and he spent 15 years with the team making an impact nearly immediately. According to the Star-Telegram, Witten played in 15 games during his rookie season and started all 16 games for every season after that.

Witten caught 1,152 passes for 12,448 yards and 68 touchdowns in his career, making 11 Pro Bowls. He ranks fourth in receptions all time behind only Jerry Rice, Tony Gonzalez and Larry Fitzgerald. He is the Cowboys all-time leader in career receptions and career receiving yardage. We wish Jason the best of luck in his new broadcasting career. He started 229 of the 239 games he played, almost 96% of Dallas Cowboys games since 2003. He once played with a broken jaw, after having to sneak rolls of coins into his trousers to make weight for the game.

"I was never the most talented, never the flashiest". Pictured: Jason Witten #82 of the Dallas Cowboys stands on the field during warmups before the game against the Los Angeles Rams at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, Oct. 1, 2017.

"He's one of the best and most complete tight ends ever to play this game", Garrett said.

Witten is a sure-fire Hall of Famer. Among the tight ends left behind, only one has a catch in a regular-season game: Geoff Swaim with nine over three seasons.

Recent news that Jason Witten was considering retirement came as a shock. In the meantime, the Cowboys are coming off a disappointing 9-7 season.

In 2012 he recorded 110 receptions, the highest number in a single season for a tight end, and in 2015 he became only the second tight end in National Football League history to register 1,000 or more receptions. Dallas drafted Stanford's Dalton Schultz in the fourth round last week.
