UK Orders Cambridge Analytica To Turn In Data Or Face Criminal Charges

This comes almost a month since the Facebook breach was announced, where Cambridge Analytica was perceived to be at the core of this cyber security scandal.

The order comes days after both firms filed for insolvency after reports that Cambridge Analytica had improperly obtained data on tens of millions of Facebook users without their knowledge or consent. "It is important that Professor Carroll, and other members of the public, understand what personal data Cambridge Analytica held and how they analysed it".

The ICO ruling says Mr Carroll sought his information from Cambridge Analytica in January of 2017.

"Even then", he added, "we still do not know the full extent of that data, where it came from or who it was given to".

Facebook earlier came clean about how almost tens and millions of its user data was illegally accessed by Cambridge Analytica, a political consulting firm, that worked on the Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.

Caroll was able to request the information under British data protection laws because his voter data had been processed in the United Kingdom.

Facebook is unarguably going through the most hard period in its history, but just how many people are shunning the platform following the Cambridge Analytica scandal?

"The company has consistently refused to cooperate with our investigation into this case and has refused to answer our specific enquiries in relation to the complainant's personal data", she said. "We were always confident that he was in the right to request his data, and are very pleased that the ICO has confirmed his position". While all wrongdoings by the massive data firm have been denied, it has been alleged that the firm illegally collected data generated from a quiz taken by Facebook users.

Michael Pachter, an analyst at Wedbush Securities was quoted as saying that Facebook had been lucky the data was apparently used only for political adverts and not anything more sinister. The company later consulted with the Donald Trump presidential campaign during the 2016 U.S. election. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been subpoenaed to testify before Congress and Parliament.

The data firm suspended its chief executive, Alexander Nix, after recordings emerged of him making a series of controversial claims, including boasts that Cambridge Analytica had a pivotal role in the election of Donald Trump.

Cambridge had fobbed off the his request for more detail, which led to the deliberation that concluded on Saturday.
