Qualcomm Will Launch Snapdragon Wear 2100 Successor this Autumn

"We're excited to work closely with Qualcomm Technologies on a streamlined implementation of Android P for Snapdragon silicon, so device manufacturers can bring the latest Android innovations to developers and consumers more quickly". "Through our strengthened relationship, Google and Qualcomm Technologies are set to expand the market for Android and make it easier for OEMs to launch devices based on Snapdragon mobile platforms".

Speaking to Qualcomm's senior director of wearables, Pankaj Kedia, Wareable blog confirmed Qualy's third-generation wearable gadget processor would be ready in the autumn and come in different variants - some with Global Positioning System, some without. You'll just have to wait for Qualcomm's official announcement if you're wondering how much battery life it can add to devices and by how much it can shrink smartwatches. The company insinuates a change on this front powered by the new chips.

The first round of Android Wear smartwatches used a slightly-modified Snapdragon 400 processor, and the Wear 2100 simply included minor adjustments.

Along with Dennis Troper, Wear OS director of product, Kedia have not only confirmed that the new platform is coming but that the new chipset will be designed from the ground up, "purpose-built" for smartwatches.

With this upcoming generation, Qualcomm touts "dedicated chips" with "no-compromises" and multiple variants for different use cases. Qualcomm has been working on the tech for over two years and it has involved a whole rethink of the system architecture. All watches will have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi as a baseline. Battery life is also expected to be improved by a substantial margin. This is one area that Google's Dennis Troper laid out as a key focus for Wear OS, and with Apple, Garmin, Fitbit and others running a new race in deep health, it's not a moment too soon. The new chipset will allow more of this functionality to remain on for longer while not using as much battery.
