New wireless alert system to be tested on mobile devices across Canada

Mobile devices in B.C. are scheduled to be sounding off Wednesday as testing continues for Canada's new public emergency alert system, but some bugs need to be worked out first after some misfires Monday.

Valladao said that in a code sequence that was entered manually by a Pelmorex employee, a space was included incorrectly, which prevented the system from sending the message in Quebec through wireless phones.

EDMONTON-Cellphones across the country will ring out this week as provincial and territorial agencies test a new alert system for Emergency Preparedness Week.

Officials botched the first widespread test of Canada's new emergency public alerting system on Monday, blaming a technical glitch for the shaky rollout of the system created to deliver emergency alerts over LTE wireless networks to compatible mobile devices.

Depending on your settings, your phone will either make a sound like a siren or vibrate for eight seconds. These test alerts will also be distributed on television and radio in those provinces. Devices turned off during the test period will not receive an alert.

The alerts will contain instructions for a safe response and are broadcast automatically at no cost to wireless users.

Unlike emergency alerts used in the United States, the canadian system requires a specific rate of vibration, a warning signal and banner to notify users about an emergency.

Another test is scheduled for Ontario on September 18, but will only see alerts broadcast via television and radio.

In Canada, warnings about emergencies are not text or SMS messages, and distributed using the so-called technology of cell broadcast.

To confirm whether a mobile device is set up to receive Alert Ready messages, mobile subscribers are encouraged to contact their service providers.
