China welcomes DPRK and USA leaders summit in Singapore

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the USA will be open to helping North Korea rebuild its economy if Kim Jong Un agrees to denuclearize the Korean peninsula.

The release of the three, who were being held in North Korean labor camps, came in advance of upcoming talks between President Donald Trump and North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.

Pompeo and other USA officials have repeatedly said they are seeking North Korea's permanent verifiable denuclearization, while North Korean officials have said that they have already achieved their nuclear objectives.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told North Korea's top diplomat that he wanted to end decades of conflict with the Hermit Kingdom and collaborate to achieve peace.

Kim will clearly be looking for some kind of victory of his own, and may seek concessions, such as ending the trade sanctions that have banned exports from North Korea, in exchange for tamping down his nuclear program.

American missionary Kenneth Bae, who was sentenced to hard labour, later said he was forced to work on a farm six days a week despite being in poor health.

"If Chairman Kim chooses the right path, there is a future brimming with peace and prosperity for the North Korean people", said Pompeo, who has led two trips to Pyongyang this year to prepare for the summit.

Bae said their release signals North Korea's intent to "improve relations with the United States".

"I want to thank Kim Jong Un", Trump said on the tarmac.

Tensions between the USA and North Korea have eased in recent months and Trump accepted the invitation for a face-to-face meeting with Kim back in March.

Red Velvet, a popular South Korean girl band, met with North Korean leadership after their concert there and described Kim as "warm" and their audience as "responsive, clapping a lot" although unfamiliar with most K-pop music.

Mr Lee, in a telephone call with Mr Trump on Friday (May 11), said Singapore is honoured to host the "a historic and momentous event" and "will do our best to facilitate a smooth and successful meeting". But they were taken to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for additional medical examinations.

The three men had been jailed for anti-state activities and placed in labour camps.

Their luck turned when a Korean-American pastor raised money to bribe North Korean officials for their release.

The Americans freed after more than a year in North Korea's prison flew home Wednesday.

"We very much hope to see further steps, more concrete steps toward denuclearization at the U.S".

Mr Shin said the North would have preferred other countries that were on the shortlist such as China, Russia, and Mongolia, but the United States would have minded their positions as global rivals or as an unfamiliar third party.

Singapore is the likely site for the historic meeting, late this month or in early June, and Pompeo says it would last one day and possibly a second.
