Alberta tries ads to win hearts and minds of anti-pipeline groups

The advertising campaign has allocated C$700,000 for ads and billboards in British Columbia, alone, and Notley says the ads will continue until the pipeline is operational.

The campaign, that includes using billboards, social media and buying radio and TV spots is created to "provide the facts and make the case that Trans Mountain contributes to a stronger Canada".

"We will marshal every constitutional and legal argument available to make sure BC does not succeed in playing chicken with the rest of the Canadian economy", says Notley.

She told reporters that bullying pipeline opponents is just not a successful tactic. "The economic consequences would be severe throughout the country".

Trudeau's government approved expansion of the Trans Mountain line in 2016, but the B.C. government has been fighting it.

Alberta has started a new campaign in B.C. that hopes to highlight the benefits and "counter the misinformation, harassment and obstruction" that the Trans Mountain Pipeline project has faced.

The federal government is also seeking intervener status in the case.

"BC should be, quite frankly, careful what it asks for", she adds.

Along with the billboards, Notley will be writing an op-ed in BC media, in response to critical comments made by Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson.

Kinder Morgan has halted all non-essential spending on the project, as the federal government figures out a way to reassure the Texas-based company that the pipeline will be built despite opposition.

Parties on both sides of the house voted on Wednesday to accept an Alberta Party amendment to put a two-year limit on the bill. "What's top of mind is doing my job for Albertans, standing up for the province, getting this pipeline built".

Notley wouldn't go into detail, but did say she's confident that construction on the pipeline planned for later this year will happen on schedule, as daily talks between Alberta, Kinder Morgan and the federal government continue.

"The information that people need to have, they will have by the 31st of May", she said.
