Gap apologises for 'incorrect' Chinese map on T-shirts

Gap has indeed had to make a full apology to the People's Republic of China after producing and selling a t-shirt with a map of China on it that just so happened to leave off Taiwan and a portion of the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh that China claims as 'Southern Tibet'.

USA clothes giant GAP said it was "extremely sorry" for selling a T-shirt with an "incomplete" map of China, after it was accused of being disrespectful to the country's territorial sovereignty. The photo of the Gap tee was snapped inside a store in Canada, and The People's Daily, the official newspaper of the Communist Party, tweeted a photo with the "correct" version of the map.

Several other large Western brands apologized for errors related to territorial issues in China.

The company said they would be undertaking "rigorous reviews" to ensure that it doesn't happen again.

China has been ramping-up efforts to police language used to describe Chinese-claimed territories such as Taiwan.

Gap, in a statement posted on Weibo, China's equivalent of Twitter, admitted that a Gap brand T-shirt sold in some overseas markets "mistakenly failed to reflect the correct map of China".

"We are truly sorry about this unintentional mistake", the company said.

China has engaged in a campaign this year to force global companies to toe the line when it comes to Taiwan and its "One China" policy. In January, websites as well as apps for Marriott were blocked for more than week after the hospitality company listed Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and Tibet as individual countries in both emails as well as apps.

On April 25, it sent dozens of global airlines a written threat of severe punishments if they don't change their websites to declare that Taiwan is part of China - a move that provoked a strong pushback from the White House.

Delta Air Lines, hotel operator Marriott and fashion brand Zara are among businesses that have apologized to China for referring to Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Tibet as countries on websites or promotional material.
