Russia-Crimea bridge to be opened by Vladimir Putin

The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko called the elections in occupied Crimea is a gross violation of worldwide law and called for increased sanctions pressure on the Kremlin.

Russian Federation annexed Crimea, a peninsula on the northern coast of the Black Sea in eastern Europe, in 2014, a move that was condemned by Ukraine and the West as an illegal land grab.

The spokesperson for the European External Action Service said in a statement on Tuesday that the bridge was "another violation of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity".

Construction of the so-called Kerch Strait Bridge to the Crimean peninsula temporarily occupied by Russian Federation is another violation of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity by Russian Federation.

"The Russian occupying powers, which have temporarily occupied Crimea, are continuing to act outside global law", Volodymyr told the French news agency.

Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed its strong protest against the launch of the bridge across the Kerch Strait by Russian Federation in occupied Crimea and once again stressed that the construction of this facility without the consent of Ukraine is unlawful.

Many in Russia saw the bridge as a move toward restoring Moscow's rule over a historically Russian region.

Built at a cost of 223 billion roubles ($3.60 billion), the bridge will be the longest dual-purpose span in Europe.

Putin is known to drive automobiles himself from time to time during working trips about the country. "Many didn't believe these plans were possible", Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on a conference call on Tuesday ahead of the ceremony.

Ukraine, which along with most of the worldwide community has not recognised Russia's annexation of Crimea, condemned the project, which was personally championed by Putin.

"Today, both in a practical sense and from a symbolic point of view, is an extremely important day", he added. It was originally expected to open in December but was finished ahead of schedule.

The bridge is set to be opened to cars on Wednesday. The rail section was due to be completed at the end of 2019.
