Bahrain, Saudi say Ramadan will begin on Thursday

They said that the Holy month will start off from Thursday. The people of Turkey, Palestine, Syria, Iran and other Middle East countries, who have been waiting for the holy month of Ramadan to begin, will try to catch a glimpse of the crescent moon tonight.

Trump also issued a statement honoring Ramadan in 2017, but condemned terrorist attacks in the United Kingdom and Egypt as "acts of depravity that are directly contrary to the spirit of Ramadan". Traditionally, countries announce if their moon-sighting council spots the Ramadan crescent the evening before fasting begins.

This means that the Holy month is to start off from May 17 in many Muslim countries of the world.

The month of Ramadan is observed in order to commemorate when Allah gave the first chapters of the holy book Quran to the prophet Muhammad.

The official date is subject to the moon-sighting.

More than 1.5 billion Muslims around the world will mark the month, during which believers abstain from eating, drinking, smoking and having martial relations from dawn until sunset. For Muslims who live in regions where Islam is not the dominant religion, challenging fasts are believed to come with greater blessings. "The worst thing for me is that ramadan is going to start, exactly when my gcse's [sic] start and they both last a whole month", one user wrote. There are a total of around 470 hours of actual fasting (almost 20 full days) in daylight hours during Ramadan 2018.

Muslims celebrate the end of Ramadan with a three-day holiday called Eid al-Fitr.

Fasting is one of the five fundamental principles of Islam.

ReutersMuslims prays inside a mosque during the fasting month of Ramadan in Mumbai, India, June 28, 2016. "Eid Mubarak" - "Happy Eid" is a common greeting. A person may see other men coming as brothers, irrespective of color, status or anything else, shoulder to shoulder for namaz (congregational prayer).
