Ex-CIA man named as suspect in Vault 7 leak

The breach marked one of the worst national security leaks since former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden provided batches of sensitive documents from the agency to the news media in 2013.

According to the report, Schulte worked for the the CIA's engineering development group until 2016, a position that would have given him access to the thousands of agency documents that were handed over to WikiLeaks in 2017. "Are they charging him with espionage?" The now 29-year-old is in jail on unrelated charges. Court papers suggest he was aware of encrypted images of children existing on the server.

Schulte was released on the condition that he not leave the Big Apple and don't use computers.

The leak, which was referred to as "Vault 7", was one of the largest in U.S. history, but in August, prosecutors separately charged Schulte with possession of child pornography - agents apparently found 10,000 images on a server he built as a business in 2009 while at university in Austin, Texas.

"Due to these unfortunate coincidences the Federal Bureau of Investigation ultimately made the snap judgment that I was guilty of the leaks and targeted me", Schulte said.

According to the former Central Intelligence Agency engineer he had been planning a trip to Mexico with his brother around the time his apartment was searched, which may have given the appearance that he was trying to flee the country.

"The government immediately had enough evidence to establish that he was a target of that investigation".

Following the search, agents stopped Schulte from travelling to Mexico for a holiday, confiscating his passport.

The cryptic description led assistant federal defender Sabrina Shroff, who entered the case in March, to demand more.

The New York Times reported a prime suspect had already been identified by United States authorities. "The government should be required to indict so Mr Schulte has the opportunity to defend himself". Otherwise he is just languishing'.

Why federal investigators haven't formally charged Schulte for the leaking isn't clear. However, the Times reports that prosecutors plan to file a new indictment within 45 days.

At the time of the leaks a year ago, the CIA released a sombre statement: "The American public should be deeply troubled by any WikiLeaks disclosure created to damage the Intelligence Community's ability to protect America against terrorists and other adversaries". He now works in the private sector.

Schulte, who has launched a Web page to raise money for his defense and post articles critical of the criminal-justice system, claims that he initially provided assistance to the FBI's investigation. The GoFundMe does not have any donations.
