Five killed in Indonesia police station attack

The attackers targeted officers after ramming a minivan into a gate at the police headquarters in Pekanbaru, the capital of Riau province, local media said on Wednesday.

But the attack comes after a series of suicide bombings by Islamist militants targeting churches and a police building in Indonesia's second-biggest of city of Surabaya over the past few days.

Four perpetrators were killed and one more was detained as he attempted to escape.

The report said that the men had driven their vehicle into the police yard before getting out to stage the attack.

Police blame a local IS-inspired group, Jemaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), for the attacks in the city of Surabaya.

This week's attacks are the worst in the world's biggest Muslim-majority country since the bombing of tourist-packed restaurants in Bali in 2005.

The bloody violence is putting pressure on Indonesia's parliament to pass a stalled security law that would give police more power to take pre-emptive action against terror suspects.

The spate of attacks by militants left at least 28 people dead with dozens more injured.

But on Sunday, a family of six - including girls aged nine and 12 - staged suicide bombings of three churches during morning services in Surabaya, killing 13.

On Monday members of another family blew themselves up at a police station in Surabaya, wounding 10.

It is said to be the deadliest since the 2002 Bali attack.

But, the country now faces a new threat, in part from from IS fighters who have come home after combat in Syria.

Local police initially said they had killed three people and wounded another.

It was not clear if Wednesday's attack was linked to the earlier incidents.

They followed a deadly prison riot staged by Islamist prisoners at a high-security jail near Jakarta last week.
