Suns win draft lottery, right to pick No. 1 next month

The Phoenix Suns had one of their franchise's signature moments on Tuesday night, as they won the 2018 NBA Draft Lottery and will be picking first in the NBA Draft.

Historically, James doesn't play with draft picks and the former No. 1 overall pick has played with just four overall picks in his career, according to ESPN's Bobby Marks.

The Bahamian big man, who played two years of prep school ball in Phoenix and spent last season with the Wildcats, is often regarded as the best prospect in the 2018 Draft - but Slovenian guard Luka Doncic is right behind him, and played for new Suns coach Ikor Kokoskov with the Slovenian national team.

"This is a historic night for the Phoenix Suns", said General Manager Ryan McDonough. The Sacramento Kings got the second pick and the Atlanta Hawks will pick third.

The 2018 National Basketball Association draft will be held on Thursday, June 21 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

It's part of a big week already for the Suns, who introduced Igor Kokoskov as their new coach Monday and now will have the chance to pick No. 1.

This year's worst team - the Suns - had a 25-percent chance of landing the No. 1 pick, while the team with the worst record next year has a 14-percent chance. "I think we'll have a great choice, no matter who we select". Kokoskov coached global prospect and consensus top three pick, Luka Doncic, overseas and could try to reunite in the desert.

Sacramento will pick No. 2 and Atlanta got the No. 3 pick - both of them moving up and bucking some odds to get there.

Now we wait until June 21, when the NBA Draft occurs! They have three picks in the first 31 in this draft, plus have some cap room to work with this summer.

Ironically, that No. 10 selection, which comes via the Los Angeles Lakers, was originally acquired by the Sixers from Phoenix through a three-way trade in February 2015 that saw Philadelphia's Michael Carter Williams go to Milwaukee.

The lottery has been around since 1985, was tweaked to a weighted system in 1990 and will be changing again next year in an effort to discourage teams from tanking.
