Recently WHO floated a scheme called REPLACE that will offer instruction for all countries on how to eliminate artificial trans fats from their foods, probably causing global suppression.

Eliminating trans fats is key to protecting health and saving lives: WHO estimates that every year, trans fat intake leads to more than 500,000 deaths of people from cardiovascular disease.

"Why should our children have such an unsafe ingredient in their foods?", World Health Organization director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in the statement.

Additionally, medical research conducted by doctors and scientists worldwide has found that trans fats are linked to increased risk of obesity, fatty liver disease and Alzheimer's disease, Yang said.

Several countries, particularly the richer ones, have already limited or are on the verge of eliminating trans fats in packaged foods.

They are often present in frying oils, fried snacks, margarine and shortening since trans fat-based oils have a longer shelf life (don't worry, Canada has almost phased them out entirely in those products).

It is also the substance commonly associated with higher levels of "Bad" cholesterol in the blood, also known as LDL cholesterol, that tends to clump up in arteries and increase the risk of developing heart disease.

Around one per cent of our daily calories come from these compounds - below the government's two per cent guideline - but campaigners say trans fats are more likely to be consumed by poorer people and argue more needs to be done.

Food manufacturers in America are expected by next month to have reworked their products so that the levels of trans fats contained in them are non-threatening.

Dr Tom Frieden, a former director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who worked with World Health Organization officials on the call to action, said the move was unprecedented.

Foods that are labelled as containing partially-hydrogenated oils or fats are a source of trans fatty acids, says the British Nutrition Foundation. Tom Frieden, president of Resolve to Save Lives. They used them in doughnuts, cookies and deep-fried foods.

Food manufacturers liked trans fatty acids, which had a longer shelf life than other fats.

The first trans fatty food to hit the USA market was Crisco shortening, which went on sale in 1911. FDA officials have not said how much progress has been made or how they will enforce their rule against food makers that do not comply.

In June, all products sold in the United States must be free of industrially produced trans-fats.

Assess and monitor trans-fat content in the food supply and changes in trans fat consumption in the population.

According to a study published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine, Denmark's cardiovascular disease deaths declined dramatically three years after policy was enforced.
