Trump lists payment to Cohen in financial disclosure form

The first thing that made the Stormy Daniels saga more than a salacious tale about a president and a porn star was the possibility that a $130,000, pre-election payment for Daniels's silence about an alleged affair constituted an illegal campaign contribution by President Trump's personal attorney, Michael Cohen.

Trump long denied any payment was made by Cohen to Daniels, but administration attorney Rudy Giuliani revealed it in a television interview last month.

President Donald Trump filed a financial disclosure form this week acknowledging that he reimbursed attorney Michael Cohen more than $100,000 previous year, CNBC reported.

A footnote to disclosures submitted to the Office of Government Ethics said Cohen had incurred "expenses" on Trump's behalf in 2016 of between $100,001 and $250,000.

"In 2016, expenses were incurred by one of Donald J. Trump's attorneys, Michael Cohen", read a footnote on the form, which was released by the Office of Government Ethics. "Cover-ups should always matter". "The information related to the payment made by Mr. Cohen is required to be reported", the officials said.

Trump's disclosure will also be the first extended look at how his businesses have performed since he became president in January 2017.

Federal law requires liabilities that exceed $10,000 to be reported even if those debts were repaid that year.

In a separate but related story, the Post reported Wednesday night that Federal Bureau of Investigation agents have questioned a translator Cohen worked with in connection with payments he received from the company Korea Aerospace Industries. His Doral golf course and resort in Miami took in $75 million.

"It wasn't for the campaign", Giuliani said at the time, adding, "Imagine if that [allegation] came out on October 15, 2016, in the middle of the last debate with Hillary Clinton?" In his letter, Apol referenced the lawsuit as the reason he was alerting the DOJ about the note. Cohen offered to help find projects for Qatar to sponsor, in exchange for a $1 million upfront fee, the newspaper reported.

The figures are before expenses and so give no indication of how much profit the president made off the properties. One of his biggest lenders is Ladder Capital, which has lent more than 100 million dollars (£73.7m).

The president denies the affair, and initially denied all knowledge of the payment, which Cohen has acknowledged was meant to stop her from going public with the allegations. A large share of that debt stems from Deutsche Bank loans to Trump National Doral. Unlike past presidents of both parties in recent decades, Trump has refused to release his tax returns. Trump can take back control of the trust at any time and he's allowed to withdraw cash from it as he pleases.

His report shows that Mr Trump received 64,840 dollars (£47,805) from the Screen Actors Guild pension fund. Mr Trump has appeared in several movies, including Home Alone 2 and Zoolander.

CREW executive director Noah Bookbinder said in a statement that the liability revelation suggested that the watchdog was correct in its March complaint, raising concerns around why it was not disclosed in the prior year's filing.
