Manchester United set to announce first mega-money summer transfer

The transfer strategy under Mourinho has never looked the most coherent but, whether they meant to or not, United have identified a real player in Fred that can plug gaps in the side where they are glaring.

Manchester United are closing in on a deal with Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred. Shakhtar have lined up Maycon from Corinthians as a replacement.

Manchester City are also rumoured to be in the race to sign the player.

Reports this morning say Fred has held talks with United and a move could be concluded as early as next week.

Fred joined Shakhtar from Brazilian side Internacional in 2013. Jose Mourinho sees both Matic and Pogba as central figures to his title plans next season.

Manchester City were thought to be close to a deal to sign the South American in the summer transfer window but a deal didn't materialise.

Manchester United target Fred has dropped another major hint on Twitter to suggest he'll be joining the club in the coming weeks.

United are also understood to be in talks with Chelsea's Brazilian midfielder Willian.

Just last month the Manchester United manager said he was only going to invest a "basic" amount of money into his squad this summer.

For any Reds who may be passing by, we asked a specialist in eastern bloc football, Manuel Veth, about Fred during his links to City, and you can listen to that podcast below.

"And there is always in a squad, a player or a couple of players, who are not playing a lot and will try to leave". With Mourinho eager to bolster his defence this summer, United are now tipped to be one of his most likely destinations. The French star could breathe a sigh of relief by knowing that an extra man is there in midfield when he goes bombing up the pitch during games.
