Kim's Letter to Trump Expresses Interest in Nuclear Summit

Tensions between the United States of America and North Korea flared after US Vice President Mike Pence compared the North Korea situation to Libya, provoking a furious reply from the Kim regime. However, his comments were the most positive from any US official since Trump abruptly cancelled the meeting last week after belligerent statements from the North.

While Cho said an agreement would "not be impossible" to strike during the talks, the run-up to the scheduled June 12 summit has somewhat devolved into a war of the wills over who more wants the meeting.

But the White House says talks of the "total denuclearization of the peninsula" do not extend to USA weapons systems - a defense umbrella covering South Korea which includes nuclear-armed submarines and strategic bombers capable of carrying nuclear bombs not based on the peninsula.

"I'm confident we're moving in the right direction".

At a time when the United States and North Korean leaders are preparing for a diplomatic summit, for the first time in history, one of the major concerns for the U.S. is the possibility of North Korea hiding "secret things". -North Korea meetings, "South Korea and the United States have been in consultation almost daily through many phone calls between Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha and Secretary of State Pompeo, as well as through diverse diplomatic channels at various levels".

Pompeo said Chol is traveling to Washington Friday with a "personal letter" from Kim Jong Un.

U.S. officials said the North Korea delegation would come to Washington to meet Trump and deliver the message on Friday, one week after Trump had abruptly called off preparations for the planned Jun 12 summit in a sharply-worded letter of his own.

The last time a North Korean official visited the White House was in 2000, when then-Vice Marshal Jo Yong-rok met President Bill Clinton and US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

Trump wrote in his letter last week that the talks would be "inappropriate" following the "hostility" from North Korea.

The United States and South Korea blacklisted the official for supporting North Korea's nuclear and missile programs in 2010 and 2016, respectively.

To make his trip this week, Kim Yong-chol needed special permission for official travel to the U.S. because he had previously been blacklisted.

White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said late on Thursday that the details of Friday's meeting between Kim Yong-chol and Trump in Washington were still being worked out.

"If Kim Jong Un denuclearizes, there is a brighter path for North Korea", he said.

Trump, the official said, "can make a fly or no-fly decision anytime he wants", referring to the possible Singapore summit.

Kim has previously made harsher comments and even threatened to launch nuclear attacks on the United States numerous times.

Kim Yong Chol is the vice chairman of the powerful Central Committee and North Korea's former spy chief.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said on Tuesday that the White House was preparing for the meeting to take place as originally planned.
