Koch network planning major campaign against Trump’s tariffs

CSPA President Joseph Galimberti met with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Monday morning, days after the USA imposed 25 per cent tariffs on some imports of foreign steel and 10 per cent tariffs on aluminum imports.

Officials in Mexico City unveiled the proposal in recent days, saying the tax would apply to US-produced pork legs and shoulders, which equate to approximately 90% of the nation's $1 billion worth of American-made products.

Mexico's retaliatory list included a 20-percent tariff on USA pork legs and shoulders, apples and potatoes and 20 to 25 percent duties on types of cheeses and bourbon, the Mexican economy ministry said in the government's official gazette.

Meanwhile, negotiations with Canada and Mexico regarding the North American Free Trade Agreement are turning toxic as those countries weigh retaliation against Washington for the new steel and aluminium tariffs.

"We need trade and one of the things we're concerned about is long-term implications that these trade issues will have on our partnerships with Mexico and Canada and other markets", said Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig, a Republican. Koch Industries is the United States' second-largest privately held company and makes everything from toilet paper to fertilizer.

The package would include increased purchases of US soybeans, corn and other agricultural goods. In a report by the Economic Policy Institute, between 2001 and 2015, about 3.4 million U.S.jobs were lost due to the country's trade deficit with China. "To suggest that it's news that Congress would want to reclaim powers that belong to the executive branch, I don't think is exactly newsworthy", he said on CNN.

"The idea that Canadian steel that's in military vehicles in the United States, that makes your fighter jets is somehow now a threat. the idea that we are somehow a national security threat to the United States is quite frankly insulting and unacceptable, " he said.

The brothers also strongly support legislation that seeks to protect "Dreamers" - people brought illegally to the United States as children - from deportation.

Mexican Economy Minister Ildefonso Guajardo said his country would now "surely" look to Europe for pork products, used in many traditional dishes in Mexico. "These tariffs amount to self-imposed barriers to the success of tax reform and we urge the administration to reconsider".

The announcement came just one day after the Koch-backed political network announced a multimillion dollar publicity campaign to Donald Trump's controversial tariffs on steel and aluminum.

In talks in Beijing over the weekend, China offered to buy close to $70 billion in US agriculture, energy and manufacturing products over a year as part of a package meant to ward off USA tariffs, according to a person briefed on the talks with the White House.

Canadian Finance Minister Bill Morneau said Washington's decision to impose the tariffs had lessened the chances for a successful outcome of the NAFTA talks.

Two-way trade is worth USA $600 billion annually but the U.S. has a deficit with Mexico of around United States $65 billion, which Trump has argued is evidence of unfair trade between the two countries.

"First of all the idea that our soldiers, who fought and died together on the beaches of World War II, in the mountains of Afghanistan, and have stood shoulder-to-shoulder in some of the most hard places in the world... this is insulting to them", he added, saying the US and Canadian economies are too closely connected for one country to be penalizing the other.
