Protesters, Democrats want immigrant families reunited

This is at least the third time a Republican official has been confronted at a public place in recent days over the president's immigration policy that separated parents entering the country illegally at the Mexican border from their children. "We will secure our borders..."

Trump called for Republicans to "stop wasting their time" until more are elected into office this coming November. They do have, though, very strong Immigration Laws. The families in question were first stopped by Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), with children taken into custody by HHS and adults detained through Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice).

President Donald Trump explicitly compared the tragedy of families whose relatives have been killed by undocumented immigrants to the family separations at the border, saying that the "angel families" are "permanently separated" from their family members.

The Trump administration is reportedly preparing to expand its use of detention facilities to house immigrants who cross the border illegally, calling for 15,000 more beds to be available for detained migrants in upcoming weeks.

U.S. immigration officials say 2,342 children were separated from 2,206 parents between 5 May and 9 June. "He wants people to just be sent back, no matter what", said Jorge Baron, executive director for the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, who compared Sunday's tweets with comments Trump was reported to have made in January about immigrants from "shithole" countries.

Sen. James Lankford says the White House needs to do a better job explaining why families were being separated at the southern border.

Trump had travelled to Capitol Hill as recently as Tuesday to sell GOP lawmakers on embracing immigration bills pushed by House leadership and to take action to halt the separation of migrant families at the border. He said Democrats would be playing defense on the issue of families if Republicans were to force them to vote on a it.

At the event, Trump also bashed "the mayor of San Diego" for warning citizens about immigration agent raids. You created this #DACA crisis & asked Congress to "do your job" & pass a bill. 2.

But the central piece of Trump's attempts to counter-program against the despairing images at the border was to stand with the "angel families", as he did repeatedly during his presidential campaign, including at the 2016 Republican National Convention. In the past, DHS said, many parents have elected to be deported without their children.

Amid the huge backlash he's facing for separating immigrant children from their families at the border, President Donald Trump held an event Thursday with parents whose children were killed by undocumented immigrants.

The US Navy is drafting plans to house up to 25,000 immigrants on its bases and other facilities, at an estimated cost to taxpayers of about $233 million over six months, a US official said on Friday.
