President Trump renews government shutdown threat if no border wall funding

Trump's comments came after he threatened on Twitter over the weekend to shut down the government if he does not receive funding for his campaign-promised border wall from Congress.

Asked if he required the full $25 billion the White House has requested to build a wall along the US border with Mexico, as well as his other immigration priorities, in order to avert a shutdown, Trump replied, "I always leave room for negotiation".

Officials from ICE and Health and Human Services said they keep records of migrants who have been detained and have documentation of parents who left the US without their children. Only a few weeks after that, Trump said he'd "love" to see another shutdown if the Democrats didn't give in to his immigration demands.

From the very beginning of his term, Trump has seemed to court a shutdown over the wall, despite the deep objections of much of his staff and Republicans in Congress.

Trump has also demanded that the USA shift to an immigration system based more on merit and less on family ties. A funding fight also could prove a distraction from Republican efforts in the Senate to confirm Trump Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh by October 1. Democratic activists in the state are hoping to leverage high-profile clashes with the Trump administration over immigration, oil drilling in California's offshore waters, and the prospect of loosening federal pollution rules on cars, to help flip GOP congressional seats to the Democratic column.

In March, Congress passed a bill with $1.6bn in border security funding, but most of it was to fix sections of an existing barrier along the US-Mexico border. We need great people coming into our Country!

Mr. Trump said he was open to negotiate on some of those points.

McConnell said Friday that talks over funding the wall would "probably" have to wait until after the midterms. He added that money for the wall was "not a question of if, it's a question of when".

Both chambers will have a short window to approve a spending bill before government funding expires. The House is now in a five-week recess, returning after Labor Day.

Deadlocks over spending and immigration caused a three-day government shutdown in January this year and again a month later, though that one lasted just a few hours.

Democrats have long opposed financing President Trump's wall but lack the votes by themselves to block House approval of that amount. They do, however, have the strength to derail legislation in the closely divided Senate.

"These allegations of abuse are extremely disturbing and must be addressed", Grassley and Feinstein wrote in a letter to the departments of Homeland Security and Health and Human Services. The Democrat-controlled House of Representatives will play defense for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the DOJ, and the Mueller probe, launch impeachment proceedings against Trump, harass ICE with subpoenas and hearings to defend illegal immigrants, and turn up the anti-Trump #resistance to 11 because they'll believe that's what put them in power. Congress must act on fixing the DUMBEST & WORST immigration laws anywhere in the world!
