USA says Russian Federation still carrying out 'pervasive' election meddling

The back and forth among the special counsel's office, Mr. Trump's lawyers and the President himself demonstrates the significant obstacles that still stand in the way of an interview.

A Justice Department spokeswoman said the department had no immediate comment on Trump's tweet about ending Mueller's probe.

Special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation ramped up this week as the first trial in the case goes before a jury, putting the investigation into Trump and his associates' actions in the spotlight.

After railing against Mueller's investigation in a series of tweets, Trump said: "This is a awful situation and Attorney General Jeff Sessions should stop this Rigged Witch Hunt right now, before it continues to stain our country any further". This is an attempt to obstruct justice hiding in plain sight.

President Donald Trump sits with Attorney General Jeff Sessions during the FBI National Academy graduation ceremony in Quantico, Virginia in December.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders defended the president's tweet, saying it was just his opinion, not an order. "The president has expressed the same opinion", Giuliani told Reuters.

Trump's lawyers sought to limit the number of questions related to possible obstruction of justice and focus on alleged collusion during the campaign.

Writing on Twitter, Trump dismissed the charges against Manafort as "old charges [that] have nothing to do with Collusion" and questioned why the government did not tell him that Manafort was under investigation before he hired him to be part of his 2016 campaign.

Trump has steadily attacked his attorney general for recusing himself from the Russian Federation probe.

After complaining about the tough questions he received from American reporters in Finland, Trump has largely steered clear of the mainstream media, instead opting for safer spaces like an interview with ally Rush Limbaugh this week.

Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats said Thursday that Russian Federation is continuing to pursue its efforts to interfere in the USA political system and said President Donald Trump has "specifically directed" the U.S. intelligence community to make countering election interference a top priority.

Manafort served as Trump's campaign chief from May to August 2016 and the president asked Wednesday: "why didn't government tell me that he was under investigation".

After more than a year on the job, Mueller should wrap up his probe, Giuliani said.

The comments came in jarring contrast to the positions of President Donald Trump, but the two men dismissed suggestions the president - who has repeatedly denied Russian Federation moved to tilt the election in his favour - is not taking the issue seriously. That, like the prosecution of former national security adviser Michael T. Flynn for lying about phone calls with the Russians during the transition, has been something Trump has tried frantically to avoid. Mueller was appointed to investigate the allegations following Trump's dismissal of FBI Director James Comey in May 2017.

"I don't know why Rudy seemed to think that obstruction by tweet is a insane notion", Rodgers said.

People inside the White House said the burst of tweets reflected the anger Trump has aired privately for months, including about Sessions. Then you'd all battle whether he has the legal right to do that, which I think he does.
