Thomas doesn’t break sweat in winning finale at Firestone

Trailing Justin Thomas by seven shots entering the final round, Johnson needed a fantastic performance to jump into contention at the 2018 World Golf Championship-Bridgestone Invitational.

Woods, playing a Firestone course where he has eight victories for the final time in the tournament's history - this will be the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational in Memphis, Tenn., next season - shot a three-over 73 on Sunday in Akron, Ohio.

It was a coronation from there with Thomas making birdie at the 13th hole to extend his lead and closing his day with five stress-free pars for a 15-under total.

After a 304 yard drive on the 410-yard par-4 10th, Woods chipped his third shot to 8 feet, which he rolled for two-putt bogey on the hole.

First round leader Poulter managed a solid 67 to match Fleetwood and Thomas at 11-under 129, two strokes ahead of Australian Jason Day and American Kyle Stanley.

Thomas, who will defend his US PGA Championship title at Bellerive Country Club next week, has a star-studded chasing pack breathing down his neck, with 2014 champion Rory McIlroy and Ryder Cup star Ian Poulter in a tie for second on 11 under. And with only 71 players in the field, there is more money to go around.

"The course was a lot tougher today and I just completely lost it on the last six holes".

"We sat down and just said, what are we doing wrong?" He had gone five months since his last victory, a playoff win at the Honda Classic. "I know it's one of Tiger's favorite courses, so I wanted to come up and see it", said Ralph Lee of Canton. The list of golfers without major championships should be getting shorter, but instead it seems like it's getting deeper and possibly even better.

"It's been hard, too, " Thomas said of trying to temper expectations.

"I'm going to have to", Woods said of picking up the scoring pace in the third round.

"Obviously we're all thinking of (Lyle) and it would be very nice to obviously have a good week", Leishman said.

Tiger Woods returned to Firestone and had his lowest opening round of the year at the Bridgestone Invitational.

The world's top players make the trip to the four WGC tournaments each year with a big payout on the line and a good-sized check just for showing up. "This is my first PGA Tour win with them here, so that's pretty cool". "I think I got away with one bad tee shot where it bounced out of the trees, but apart from that played lovely, putted really nice and just picked them off".
