Massive wildfire becomes largest in California history

"Yes, we have plenty of water", CalFire Chief Scott McLean said by telephone, adding that the two largest blazes in California this week - the Carr Fire and the Mendocino Complex Fire - were each ringed by at least three major reservoirs.

In contrast to the current largest fire in state history, the 2017 Thomas Fire, which burned for over a month before being contained, the Mendocino Complex has attained this enormous size in under two weeks.

The Mendocino Complex is technically two separate fires.

In his first tweet about this summer's California wildfires, President Trump blamed environmental laws for making the blazes worse by preventing firefighters from using a "massive amount of readily available water".

NORTHCOM's National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) in Boise, Idaho, has estimated that more than 127 wildfires are burning on about 1.6 million acres in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona and Alaska. "It's not like we would've taken that water and sprayed it on the forest, and it's not clear how drying out our rivers would reduce our fire risks", Westerling says.

Cal Fire officials said water-dropping aircraft made some progress against one of the fires in the complex over the weekend, while the other has grown substantially, spreading into the Mendocino National Forest.

Crews battling the second-largest wildfire ever recorded in California fought on Monday to keep flames from descending a ridge into foothill communities, as reinforcements arrived from as far away as Alaska.

An inmate firefighter pauses during a firing operation as the Carr fire continues to burn in Redding, California on 27 July 2018.

Combined, they form the biggest blaze that California firefighters are now battling. Another 9,000 buildings are threatened.

Hurley said some temperatures could reach 43 C in Northern California over the next few days with 24 km/h winds fanning the flames.

Hundreds of colleagues, family and friends attended a memorial service Saturday in Fresno for National Forest Service Capt. Brian Hughes. Mandatory evacuations are still in place for areas in Lake, Colusa, and Mendocino County.

Cal Fire said: "Over the past 48 hours, fire has impacted all of the roads used to access Yosemite Valley, burning dead and downed trees that can become very explosive and fall without warning".

Fire officials have condemned the presidents comments, saying that they are not in fact struggling to source enough water to contain the fires.

At the same time, neither fire agencies nor firefighters have complained about a lack of water.

The complex of fires, which has burned 75 homes, has been less destructive to property than some of the other wildfires in the state because it is mostly raging in remote areas.

Environmentalists and some politicians say the uptick in the intensity of the state's wildfire season may be linked in part to climate change. In response to the devastating wildfires in Shasta County, Tri Counties Bank has created a verified GoFundMe campaign to help those impacted by the fires.
