Some Tottenham fans on Aston Villa reportedly preparing Jack Grealish deal

Spurs were open to offloading others, such as Toby Alderweireld and Danny Rose, with Pochettino not keen on having unsettled players on the fringes of his squad who could potentially be disruptions as the season goes on.

And with less than four hours left in the window, the Tottenham manager is losing faith that the club will be able to add to the team that finished third in the Premier League last season.

The north Londoners were linked with a whole host of names with the likes of Anthony Martial, Layvin Kurzawa, Marcelo Brozovic, Geoffrey Kondogbia, Wilfried Zaha and Jack Grealish among those touted as targets throughout the last few weeks.

After Spurs finally decided to make an opening offer for Grealish on Tuesday, it now seems the 22-year-old will be staying put at Villa Park for the foreseeable future.

"It's hard to understand for people that Tottenham didn't sign or sell a player, but sometimes in football you need to behave differently and we're happy with our squad", he said.

"If you cannot add players who can improve your squad, the most important thing is to make sure you do not lose your best player".

In an abbreviated trading period when English top-flight clubs collectively spent more than 1.2 billion pounds, there was one anomaly by the close of business on Thursday.

"The club is doing an awesome effort to try to finish the stadium as soon as possible, and the lodge finished at the training ground".

However, former Arsenal star Merson is backing the Gunners to finish outside the top four despite the influx of new talent in the 2018 summer transfer window.

"Building a stadium that is almost £1bn". That is true, don't believe in £400m, that is the truth. Then with Brexit it's worse because the cost is 30 per cent more. "For me [that] is to be fearless".

"I didn't see Tottenham buying anyone anyway, but I'd have them fourth", Merson told Sky Sports.

"That maybe looks bad because of the perception and because of the history of football, but that is our decision - to keep the best players and to keep the squad". "It's a fearless decision".
