Australia's John Millman victorious against Roger Federer at US Open

The five-time champion was beaten 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (3) in the round of 16.

Naomi Osaka reached her first grand slam quarter-final with victory over fellow 20-year-old Aryna Sabalenka.

Despite the applause and gasps from the crowd, as well as his opponent, Federer appeared as cool and calm as ever as he flashed a small smile and walked back to the end of the court ready to commence play again.

Federer took the opening set courtesy of a break in Millman's first service game.

In the final tiebreaker, he double-faulted twice in a row. "It was very hot on the court even though it doesn't look too hot it's hit me". He started that 15-minute struggle by missing 18 of his initial 20 first serves. "But I got out of a tough second set and really found my feet and started to be a little bit more aggressive". While he eventually held there, he needed to save seven break points along the way. "Sometimes, you just have to survive".

But it's his father Ron, nicknamed "The Fox", who has become somewhat of a social media star, after getting lost on his way to watch his son play at the Wimbledon earlier this year.

During lengthy exchanges from the baseline, Sharapova often blinked first, although a couple of times the righty managed to switch her racket to her left hand for a desperation shot to extend a point. I have hoped for.

Until Monday night, Federer had been 40-0 against opponents outside the Top 50 at the US Open, according to the official match report.

Elsewhere in the men's bracket, No. 7 seed Marin Cilic moves on to meet No. 21 seed Kei Nishikori in a quarterfinal.

Millman cursed himself for missing one set point but threw everything into a series of forehands to bring up a second and forced Federer into another error.

Djokovic said it used to be Andy Roddick but since the American's retirement from the sport, Aussie Nick Kyrgios was probably the next best.

"He pushed me around, " Kohlschreiber said after Nishikori reached the final eight for a second straight Grand Slam tournament.

Both Nishikori and Djokovic missed last year's U.S. Open with arm injuries.

Millman pulled off the historic upset over Federer in their fourth round matchup, 3-6 7-5 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (7-3) to reach the quarter finals of the singles tournament, the first time in his entire career Millman has reached the final stages of a Grand Slam event. "But [I'm] enjoying playing every match and enjoying playing tennis again a little more than before".
