Democratic Activist Ousts Incumbent Massachusetts Congressman in Primary

"I'm sorry it didn't work out, but this is life, and this is O.K. America's going to be O.K. Ayanna Pressley is going to be a good congresswoman, and I will tell you that MA will be well served", Capuano said, according to The New York Times.

Massachusetts' last Democratic primary upset came in 2014, when Seth Moulton defeated Rep. John Tierney in the state's 6th Congressional District.

Pressley is poised to become the state's first black woman in Congress.

The race between Capuano and Pressley was perhaps the most closely watched contest in MA, especially since Pressley drew comparisons to Ocasio-Cortez.

A 10-term incumbent congressman in MA conceded to a progressive candidate during the state's Democratic primaries Tuesday night.

They moved to Brooklyn, and Pressley attended Boston University from 1992 to 1994, but left school to work full time at a hotel to support her mother.

That wave of change sweeping Pressley into Congress could help the incoming freshmen overcome her low spot on the political totem pole, said Democratic strategist Scott Ferson, who helped Seth Moulton win over incumbent U.S. Rep. John Tierney in 2014.

The Democratic nominating contest fight between US Representative Michael Capuano, 66, and Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley, 44, was his first since 1998.

"The Democratic Party might want to feature more women of color and more women in leadership positions, and she might have an easier track through that as a result", Mulcare said.

It is the only in the state to have a majority non-white population.

Pressley will vie for a seat in the House of Representatives after a career in Boston's City Council. As FiveThirtyEight reports, a MA candidate has followed in the footsteps of the young Ocasio-Cortez with a surprising upset against a mainstream Democrat challenger on Tuesday evening.

However, two other Massachusetts Democrats, Reps. Joseph P. Kennedy II and former Sen. She joins a number of other black women who've won their primaries this year, including Stacey Abrams, who's running for governor in Georgia, Lauren Underwood, running for a congressional seat in IL, and Jahana Hayes, who's also running for a seat in Congress from CT.

And black politicians in three states - Florida, Georgia and Maryland - have won the Democratic nomination for governor, a historic turn for a country that has elected just two black governors in US history. Robert Pittenger, R-N.C.; Mark Sanford, R-S.C., and fellow 10-term Rep. Joe Crowley, D-N.Y.

She enjoyed a boost in the race's final weeks thanks to endorsements from both Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey - who has made a name for herself by suing the Trump administration - as well as the Boston Globe, the state's paper of record.
