Ex-Trump aide George Papadopoulos jailed for two weeks over Federal Bureau of Investigation lies

Federal prosecutors with the special counsel's office had asked Judge Randolph Moss for a sentence of up to six months in prison. Mifsud's current whereabouts are unknown, and Papadopoulos has denied telling anyone else from the president's campaign about Mifsud's claims.

Papadopoulos soon made contact with a mysterious Maltese academic, Joseph Mifsud.

In court Friday, prosecutor Andrew Goldstein said Papadopoulos's cooperation "didn't come close to the standard of substantial assistance".

Trump and his allies have repeatedly downplayed Papadopoulos' role on the campaign, with one of them describing him as a mere "coffee boy".

"The president of the United States hindered this investigation more than George Papadopoulos ever could", Breen said.

"The sentence imposed here should reflect the fact that lying to federal investigators has real consequences, especially where the defendant lied to investigators about critical facts, in an investigation of national importance, after having been explicitly warned that lying to the FBI was a federal offense", the prosecutors added.

Papadopoulos had pleaded guilty to the crime last October.

Papadopoulos' conversations with Mifsud were not related to seeking dirt on Clinton, the lawyers said, but an effort to broker a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Papadopoulos said Trump gave "a sort of a nod" when he raised the idea of the meeting, but that Sessions was "actually enthusiastic" about it taking place.

At a campaign meeting at the end of March 2016 Papadopoulos told Trump, then-senator and now Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and other campaign officials that he had connections in London that could set up a Trump-Putin meeting ahead of the November election. In a court filing August 31, Papadopoulos's lawyers painted him as a political newcomer "eager to show his value to the campaign", and quickly got in over his head.

In the interview - the first since he pleaded guilty a year ago - the former campaign advisor insisted that he never alerted the Trump campaign about Russian dirt.

Papadopoulos concluded by saying "this investigation has global implications, and the truth matters". The case was kept under seal for three weeks after his guilty plea and made public only when Mueller announced the indictments of campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his top deputy, Rick Gates, for money laundering, illegal lobbying and other charges unrelated to the election.

After Papadopoulos and his legal team left the courthouse in a black Chevy Suburban, his family members hung behind outside the courthouse.

Breen also rejected the idea that Papadopoulos was the victim of a witch hunt or prosecutorial misconduct.

"I think that if we're going to meet it's got to be a fair meeting", Trump told reporters on board Air Force One.

USA investigators were only alerted to Papadopoulos's activities in mid-2016 after he told Australia's ambassador to London, Alexander Downer, about his talks with Mifsud during a late-night drinking session in a London pub.
