Obama, on campaign swing, urges ‘sanity in our politics’

Former President Barack Obama's remarks in his home state of IL came after a almost two-year absence from the political stage, during which he avoided directly criticizing Trump and made a calculated effort not to utter his successor's name.

The former president jumped into the campaign fray Saturday in Anaheim, Calif., a former Republican stronghold, to remind voters to cast ballots for Democratic congressional candidates in the upcoming midterm elections, ABC News reported. Obama asserted that Trump has merely been capitalizing on pent up resentment that politicians had been fanning for years prior.

Jedediah Bila said this was a reminder of the "professorial" lecturing from Obama that people got exhausted of contrasted with how Trump "speaks with people".

In a nod to the turbulence of the past week - which saw allegations of a secret "resistance" working inside the White House - the 57-year-old Obama poured scorn on the idea that "everything will turn out okay" because some of Trump's staff are secretly ignoring the boss's orders. "It did not start with Donald Trump", said Obama, per CNN.

Casting aside the typical low profile of a former president, Mr Obama returned to the campaign trail on Friday in IL to help Democrats running in the upcoming midterm elections.

"It shouldn't be Democratic or Republican to say that we don't target groups of people because of what they look like or how they pray", Obama said.

He told the students in the audience: "You need to vote because our democracy depends on it". All these terrified tea party activists, and the Republican leaders warning of profound social transformation, were really just concerned about the budget deficit.

Pence said Obama's criticism would draw a favourable contrast between Democrats and Republicans in the campaign.

"I wish he had gone a little harder on Trump", said Lee Rice, 73, an electrician from Oakdale in California's central valley.

Mike Levin, who is running against Republican Diane Harkey for the 49th Congressional District seat being vacated by Republican Darrell Issa, paid tribute to the former president last month after receiving his endorsement.

Obama also delivered a message via a NowThis video released Saturday urging young people to get out and vote. "Where there's a vacuum in our democracy, when we are not participating, we're not paying attention, when we're not stepping up - other voices fill the void". Obama's speech castigated Trump as the product of a party that long ago went mad. "I found he's very good". Pirro said. "How dare you!"

There are now 237 seats held by Republicans in the House of Representatives and 193 held by Democrats. As Obama noted, the supposed fiscal conservatism that Republicans cited as the reason they couldn't compromise disappeared overnight when they took power: "This is supposed to be the party of fiscal conservatism".

Obama delivered his message Saturday in one of the most critical counties in the country for Democrats ahead of the November midterms.
