Anniversary of deadly 9/11 attacks gives ‘perspective’ as NAFTA talks resume: Freeland

"The ruination of the country", Trump said at an event in North Dakota.

As U.S. and Canadian trade officials worked last week toward a so-far elusive deal to update the North American Free Trade Agreement, Joe Graves was concerned about the auto plant where he's worked for 30 years.

But there remain obstacles to reaching a deal, which both US President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said they were prepared to walk away from.

A late day comment from Pres. Trump boosted the precious metal and the Canadian dollar where he said "Trade talks going well".

Take the automobile industry as an example: If Canada was left out of NAFTA, vehicle prices could rise in the US due to proposed new tariffs on Canadian autos. It also wants significant new access to Canada's sheltered dairy industry and seeks the relaxing of foreign ownership restrictions on Canadian media companies.

"And one of the things that I think we are accomplishing in this agreement is a better deal for Canadian and USA workers in the auto sector".

"We recognize that there is a possibility of getting there by Friday, but it is only a possibility, because it will hinge on whether or not there is ultimately a good deal for Canada", he said at a news conference in northern Ontario on Wednesday.

At the White House, Trump told reporters Canada wanted a deal "very much" and that talks were "coming along well". "I can't read the tea leaves, but. coming back and saying, "Sorry, we couldn't get an agreement" is just too hard politically to manage" on both sides, Sosnow said.

Freeland returned to Washington on Tuesday to continue meeting with her U.S. counterpart.

No word yet on when she might return to Washington to continue NAFTA talks. They are aiming to complete a deal by the end of the month so that Mexico, Canada and the United States can sign an agreement by the end of November.

"We're looking for a deal which is good for Canadians, which is good for Canadian workers, which is good for Canadian families (and) good for Canadian farmers", Freeland said on "The West Block".

Mr. Monette said that it is absolutely necessary to back up the supply management to protect the domestic producers.

Negotiators appear focused primarily on three key issues: dairy, culture and the Chapter 19 dispute resolution mechanism.

"We're negotiating all this at once".

Canada's main stock market started the week down for seventh-straight day amid an off-day for any headlines on NAFTA as negotiations are set to resume Tuesday.

Still, "with a bit of flexibility, things could move quickly", the source added.

Trudeau and his ministers will hold a caucus retreat in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, to plot their strategy.

US Ambassador to Canada Kelly Craft meanwhile delivered an address in Gander, Newfoundland, where dozens of in-bound flights were diverted in the immediate aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks.
