SpaceX Will Send World's First Private Space Passenger Around the Moon

SpaceX Will Send World's First Private Space Passenger Around the Moon

Last night was no exception. SpaceX will hold the identity of its passenger from the public until Monday, September 17th. Will it be a boy or a girl?

On Twitter, Elon Musk was asked who the passenger is and simply responded with an emoji of the Japanese flag.

The company said the programme is an important step towards making recreational space travel a reality for people. "No one has visited since the last Apollo mission in 1972".

This new mission, different from the one discussed by owner Elon Musk previous year, would have one person fly around the moon in SpaceX's BFR launch vehicle.

The tourist will fly in the Big Falcon Rocket (BFR) being created to carry people into deep space, the Elon Musk led company said in a tweet.

The BFR, which Elon Musk said can carry up to 100 people when it was first touted a year ago, will fly around the moon as part of the personal trip.

Musk responded to questions from Twitter users following the announcement, saying that the rocket is still in development and has been "intentionally" created to resemble one seen in a classic comic book series, "The Adventures of Tintin". He also revealed in another tweet that the rendering of the BFR spacecraft was new.

The company first made plans to fly two private citizens around the moon in February of 2017 using the company's Falcon Heavy rocket and Dragon capsule, but those plans have apparently been revised. However the passengers were never named and the flight has yet to materialize. "And we believe we can do this with the revenue we receive from launching satellites and servicing the space station".
