Federer battles past Simon to reach Swiss Indoors semi-finals

Roger Federer was stretched to the limit by Gilles Simon before overcoming the valiant Frenchman 7-6 (1) 4-6 6-4 to reach the semi-finals of his hometown Swiss Indoors tournament on Friday.

The two final places will be decided at the Paris Masters, where Federer will attempt to become the first man to reach a century of ATP tournament victories.

"I'd love to see now what kind of results I can have - but it went his way today, this is how it ended".

Just hours after, though, Federer dropped a major retirement hint while speaking to the ATP World Tour following his 99 triumph.

"I want to congratulate Kei on a great week", Anderson said on court after receiving the trophy.

"The results show it as well, so I'm very happy".

Federer dominated the 20th-ranked Medvedev and had his first match-point chance to break serve again at 5-1.

The Swiss was a break down in both sets against the Romanian, who set up the match by upsetting second seed Alexander Zverev in the last four. Federer was made to work hard during his title defence but he managed to dig deep and thereby win his 99th career title. This week, he has beaten No. 6 Marin Cilic and Zverev, who is ranked fifth.

"It will be a challenge but I'm excited to see how I feel tomorrow, playing a young guy", said Federer.

Also, Roger has played in his 200th ATP semi-final here and it really turned out to be a great week for him despite struggling in all five matches, celebrating the 25th indoor title. He needed 44 minutes to claim the opening set but was brought back to level-pegging as Zverev won the second in a tiebreaker.

The Romanian aims for a first title after arriving at Basel without a career win over a top-10 opponent. Federer stayed focused, breaking back with a smash victor in game seven and taking all the momentum, securing another break at 4-4 and closing the match on own serve in the following game after saving a break point, rattling off five straight games to secure the title in style and lift his 99th ATP trophy in an fantastic career.
