Amnesty urges United Nations states to ‘end silence’ over Saudi abuses

"The operation targeted ballistic missile launch-and-storage sites, UAV [unmanned aerial vehicle] ground stations, bomb-making facilities and affiliated logistical-support sites at Sanaa's Al-Dailami Airbase", the SPA quoted coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki as saying, as reported by Anadolu Agency (AA).

The United States and Britain have called for an end to the conflict, raising pressure on Saudi Arabia as it faces a global outcry over the murder of prominent Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2.

The blockage of aid shipments has threatened starvation in Yemen, warned the United Nations, as fighting between the Yemeni government, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, and Houthi rebels, reportedly backed by Iran, continues.

Three-quarters of Yemen's 29 million people are food insecure, 1.8 children suffer from malnutrition and 400,000 children under age 5 are in the worst stage of malnutrition - without intervention they might die.

After UN-backed peace talks collapsed in September, the coalition announced it was relaunching an assault on Hodeida.

The officials said the reinforcements arrived Wednesday in tanks and armored vehicles provided by the United Arab Emirates, a key member of the coalition that has been battling the Shiite rebels, known as Houthis, since 2015. In the course of this, he demanded an end to fighting, and an immediate halt to all airstrikes against populated areas.

Hodeidah is the only port held by the Houthis and serves as the entry point for the bulk of Yemen's commercial imports and aid supplies. But the Houthis, who control the capital and much of northern Yemen, have so far showed few signs of weakening in the three-year-long conflict that has become a military stalemate.

Houses and civilian properties were badly affected by the continuing Saudi-led airstrikes, said Masirah TV.

According to the United Nations, at least 10,000 people have been killed since the coalition entered the conflict.

Other rights groups estimate the toll could be five times higher.

The latest fighting comes a day after the Yemeni government said it welcomed efforts to restore peace following calls by key USA officials and the UN's envoy to Yemen Martin Griffiths for warring parties to come to the table "within a month".
