Lion Air Plane Smashes Into Pole In Indonesia Week After Fatal Crash

The FAA also notified other regulatory agencies around the world, which typically follow the USA agency's lead on safety matters.

Last night, Boeing issued an "operations-manual bulletin" reminding airlines that their crews should use existing guidelines when dealing with faulty sensor situations such as this one.

The 737 Max 8 aircrafts that the company makes could be getting incorrect input from their "angle of attack" sensor, which is the angle of the airplane or its wings compared to wind.

The US planemaker said investigators looking into the Lion Air crash had found that one of the "angle of attack" sensors on the aircraft had provided erroneous data. That last step appears to be what the Lion Air pilots didn't do, perhaps because they couldn't recall the procedure or they weren't fully aware of what precisely was happening.

Under some circumstances, a 737 MAX jet could automatically push down its nose if it detects that a stall is possible, based on the angle of attack. If the flow is disrupted by a plane going too slow or climbing too steeply, that can cause an aerodynamic stall and a plane will plummet. Boeing didn't recommend new inspections or other action for operators. The stock had climbed 24 percent this year through Tuesday.

Now Boeing is warning pilots and airlines, including Air Canada and WestJet, that they could experience similar issues with their Boeing 737 Max planes, the same model as the Lion Air plane that crashed.

Lion Air flight JT610 was en route to Pangkal Pinang, Indonesia, when it suddenly lost contact with traffic control operators after departing from Jakarta. However, the Times noted, there has been no evidence of widespread problems with airspeed indicators in the Max 8 fleet.

A Lion Air passenger jet has been involved in another accident - just a week after a plane from the Indonesian airline crashed with the loss of all 189 people on board.

"This is all coming from the Indonesian crash", said the person briefed on the Boeing bulletin.

Boeing has delivered 219 737 MAX jets to customers globally, with 4,564 orders for jets yet to be delivered. The Boeing 737 MAX is a more fuel-efficient version of the manufacturer's best-selling single-aisle 737 series. They were flown to the capital later Wednesday evening aboard a different aircraft. But the urgency of a fatal accident can trigger a flurry of such notices.

The Federal Aviation Administration also plans to issue an airworthiness directive for the plane in question. The aircraft system that handles the nose up and down movement (called stabilizer trim system) will put the nose down in response to the erroneous AOA sensor.
