Northern California Wildfire Killed Five People in Vehicles

A Northern California wildfire that moved so fast firefighters didn't even try to stop it killed five people, authorities said Friday as the blaze quadrupled in size after leveling much of a town of almost 30,000 people.

The fires, one in the north of the state and another to the south near Los Angeles, are moving fast, driven by strong winds.

At least two firefighters have been injured and multiple civilians injured, but number aren't available yet, Butte County Fire Battalion Chief Bill Reid said Thursday.

A raging wildfire in southern California has swept into the beach resort of Malibu - home to many Hollywood stars - leaving buildings burning and sending residents fleeing. "I'll be darned if I'm going to let those horses burn in the fire", said Fallon, who stayed on her property to protect her 14 horses, all of which survived. "I pray everyone is safe", she said.

But he did say that four people were found inside a vehicle in the Paradise area, while another was found nearby outside the vehicle.

Rescuers used a bulldozer to push abandoned cars out of the way in order to reach a hospital and evacuate patients as the fire engulfed the building, Butte County Supervisor Doug Teeter said.

Roughly 2,200 firefighters are now battling the deadly flames.

Butte County Sheriff's Office said an evacuation ordered had been issued for the small communities of Stirling City and Inskip.

An estimated 75,000 homes were also evacuated along the borders of Ventura and Los Angeles counties, according to AP. Today, it mushroomed to 70,000 acres and apparently is still growing as fire officials report 0 percent containment.

The massive blaze spread north Friday, prompting officials to order the evacuation of Stirling City and Inskip, two communities north of Paradise along the Sierra Nevada foothills.

"Just landed back home and had 1 hour to pack up & evacuate our home".

With the Camp Fire still raging, Butte County school officials have made a decision to close all public schools until at least after the Thanksgiving break.

The company said in a one-paragraph summary filed Thursday with state utility regulators that it had experienced an outage on the line about 15 minutes before the fire started. Millions of Californians remain under a "red flag" warning for conditions both ripe for fires and unhealthy air conditions.

The region has grappled with serious wildfires - including the worst in the state's history, the Mendocino and Thomas fires - on and off since 2017. At this point, firefighters are trying to save lives and not property, which should tell you all you need to know about how unsafe the situation is.
