How to enable Android Pie's new dark mode and save battery life

Google even released a graph that shows battery usage for apps that are all dark versus those that are white (like much of Google's apps are), and there is a huge difference in battery usage there.

In order to give users and Android developers more controls to ensure the App compatibility across all devices, Google has added new In-app Updates API to the Android system. Dark Mode helps power conservation in devices with OLED screens as the pixels are completely turned off unlike LCDs where power is required to display both white and dark shades.

No matter how strong your allegiance to Android or iPhone is, you'll probably agree that the worst thing about Android phones and iPhones is battery life.

Google's new contract for Android vendors that want its core apps aims to bring the industry in line with Samsung's security patching model. Presenting this data to developers seems like the first step of making a case that integrating dark UI options is important.

Generally, when you increase the screen's brightness, it affects the battery life of the device. To compare, in 2017, on average 0.09 percent of devices that exclusively used Google Play had one or more PHAs installed. Since most high-end phones use OLED panels, there's no backlight that has to be on all the time.

The disparity between the two options on full brightness suggests using dark mode for applications could bring both long and short-term battery benefits. For instance, YouTube users can manually activate Dark Mode by following these steps.

Funnily enough, Google acknowledged that it had made a mistake in encouraging app developers to use the colour white for their apps, including Google's own apps.

However, the app's dark mode was shown to only be using 96mA. Even using a dark theme in Gboard can reduce power consumption significantly, by up to 21%. In essence, pixels displaying the colour black are actually turned off and are using very little power - if any. As well as more closely resembling other Google apps, the redesigned Files by Google has a look that is cleaner and more modern.

Right now, the in-app update API is being tested through the Android Google Chrome app and with select partnered developers, but Google plans to expand that early access program in the near future. So we do know that Google's teams are working on dark modes for different apps from Google. Well, hearing this report is a good news for most of us.
