Netanyahu becomes Israel military affairs minister

Hundreds of Israelis from Israeli communities surrounding the besieged Gaza Strip, participated in a protest in Tel Aviv, in central Israel, on Thursday, against "a weak reaction" on the part of the Israeli government after agreeing to a ceasefire with the Hamas movement.

Netanyahu has been seeking to contain the political fallout of his decision to accept a ceasefire deal on Tuesday that ended the worst escalation between Israel and Hamas in Gaza since a 2014 war.

Gaza militants fired 460 rockets into Israel, while the Israeli air force struck 160 targets in Gaza. Witnesses said most of the injuries occurred in stone-throwing incidents at the usual five protest locations.

No tire burnings or attempts to breach the fence were reported.

Israel was quick to accept a truce after a botched Israeli operation in Gaza was met with a strong reaction from the Palestinian resistance in Gaza, killing an Israeli special operations officer and firing a record number of almost 500 rockets into Israel in a single day. Such acts have often triggered lethal Israeli army fire.

A party spokesman said Netanyahu met Education Minister Naftali Bennett Friday after the government was left with a knife-edge majority in parliament following a key coalition partner's resignation.

The deadlock was revealed by Israel's Channel 10 news, which reported that Netanyahu told ministers that Bennett's ultimatum was "the main stumbling block to keeping the coalition together". Some 170 Palestinians, many of them unarmed, have been killed by Israeli fire.

An Israeli officer was killed during the Gaza raid, while a Palestinian labourer who worked in Israel was killed in a rocket attack.

"At the beginning of the week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will hold conversations with the heads of the coalitions, and he relies on the ministers' responsibility not to make a historic mistake in toppling a right-wing government", the statement said. Since late March, thousands of Gazans have joined the Hamas-led demonstrations in a bid to end a crippling Israeli blockade.

Protesters were also seen confronting Israeli police, who attempted to maintain order during the mass protest.
