Cleveland Cavaliers announce JR Smith no longer with the team

The J.R. Smith era is over in Cleveland.

The circumstances, although different from that of Carmelo Anthony and the Houston Rockets, presently warrant the same response.

And as long as the Cavs are operating this way, Smith is not interested in being part of it.

The news comes in the wake of Smith telling The Athletic's Jason Lloyd that he doesn't believe the team is trying to win games.

When LeBron James left for the Los Angeles Lakers, the Cleveland Cavaliers put on a fearless face and said the plan was still to make the playoffs.

A source close to Smith said the split was "amicable", and the Cavs are simply "going in a different direction" from where Smith wanted to go.

"I don't think the goal is to win", he recently told The Athletic.

"The goal isn't to go out there and try to get as many wins as you can. I think that was always the plan".

LeBron James left the Cleveland Cavaliers this summer after leading them to four straight NBA Finals. Things were supposed to be much better this time around, but the Cavs are an NBA-worst 2-13, including 0-8 on the road, and coach Tyronn Lue was sacked after the team started 0-6. Veterans have seen their minutes given to young players.

Smith has requested to be traded and although he has asked to get out of Cleveland, he doesn't want to take a buyout in order to make his exit.

As it was initially viewed as a solid return for the Cavaliers considering the circumstances, Thomas and Crowder ultimately did not fit in and both were moved at the trade deadline last season.

Love has only played in four games this season, averaging 19.0 points, 13.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game. "I appreciate lessons I've learned and I'm just ready to move forward".
