Mexico Increases Border Security after Migrants Attempt to Cross

President Trump threatened to permanently close the US border with Mexico on Monday, saying he'll take the drastic action if members of a swelling migrant caravan are not deported back to their Central American homelands.

United States border officials on Sunday temporarily closed the San Ysidro port of entry between Tijuana and San Diego, one of the busiest border crossings in the world, "to ensure public safety' after agents shot several rounds of tear gas at migrants, leaving children screaming and coughing, the Associated Press reported".

CBP Commissioner Kevin McAleenan told reporters Monday that as many as 1,000 people that were part of a migrant caravan traveling through Central America and Mexico sought to enter the United States illegally.

Tyler Q. Houlton, a spokesman for U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which oversees U.S. Customs and Border Protection, on November 26 tweeted that CBP "has always maintained the right to responsibly protect themselves from those wishing to cause them harm while they do their important and unsafe jobs".

Alyssa Milano, Kathy Griffin, and Rosie O'Donnell slammed President Trump after Sunday's border clash. Video shows some migrants throwing rocks over a fence.

Mexico City has promised to ramp up security at the border.

The migrants, mostly Hondurans, have travelled to the border in large groups, or caravans and now number more than 8,000.

Trump wants migrants to remain in Mexico while their USA asylum cases are adjudicated.

On Monday, he tweeted: "Mexico should move the flag-waving Migrants, many of whom are stone cold criminals, back to their countries".

U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said in a statement that the agency has "confirmed that there are over 600 convicted criminals traveling with the caravan".

At least one person crossed the US border and was apprehended by border authority, though a Mexican government official said at least 30 people crossed into the USA and were detained.

"And so they used tear gas", he added. They marched to ask for asylum and thank the Mexican authorities for their support.

Democrats and other critics called the use of tear gas an overreaction, and questioned the idea of keeping the migrants in Mexico to make asylum claims there. I observed as the migrants, pushing baby strollers and wheelchairs with their meager belongings on their backs, streamed across the Tijuana river to the Mexican immigration offices and through fences to neighboring train tracks.

Numerous thousands who have gathered in Tijuana have said they will wait until they can seek asylum.

Protesters were caught between the Mexican and US authorities.

"What's kind of striking to me... is some of the visual and rhetorical parallels between what we're seeing at the border right now and what we often see happen in Israel with the Palestinians". The United States is one of 193 parties committed to the convention. There can be no disagreement when it comes to firing tear gas on innocent families.
