Pelosi wins Democratic nomination for leader as opposition crumbles

Nancy Pelosi has been nominated by House Democrats to lead them in the new Congress, but she still faces a showdown vote for House speaker when lawmakers convene in January.

Congressman Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) announced today that he will cast his vote in support of Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi to serve as the Speaker of the House of Representatives for the 116th Congress.

And on Wednesday, the nine members of the Problem Solvers Caucus, who had said they would vote Pelosi only if she agreed to new rules changes, said they had reached out a deal with Pelosi and would support her.

Pelosi, speaking to reporters after the vote, expressed confidence that she will win the speakership in January, saying, "I think we're in pretty good shape". Are there dissenters? Yes. The make-or-break moment for Pelosi isn't expected to come until January when the full House holds a final floor vote to elect the Speaker. If too many vote against Pelosi before the full House, Republicans could grab control of the speaker's gavel. "We remain united behind our goal of new leadership and intend to vote against Leader Pelosi in caucus and on the floor of the House".

A small group of Democrats had been intent on derailing Pelosi's bid for speaker.

House Democrats have won at least 233 seats in the 435-member House in the November midterm election, with a few races still uncalled.

Two years ago, 63 Democrats voted for Rep. Tim Ryan / against Pelosi for Democratic leader. While the total who voted against her is more than she can afford to lose, there are some members, especially freshmen from tough districts, who needed to show they wanted new leadership but may be willing to vote for her on the House floor when it counts. Joe Cunningham of SC and Abigail Spanberger of Virginia are among those who said they'd vote against Pelosi on the House floor.

The ongoing rebellion against Pelosi - of which another MA delegation member, Representative Seth Moulton, is a leader - has revealed frustration in the caucus about how long Pelosi, 78, and her top two deputies have held on to power.

Higgins said he changed course and agreed to support Pelosi after a 72-hour pre-Thanksgiving effort she initiated last week to win him over.

Those trying to oust Pelosi say they always knew the internal caucus election would fall in her favor. Seth Moulton and Kathleen Rice, who are refusing to back her on the grounds of facilitating new leadership. Many of the Democrats who lost blamed Pelosi.

The group is essentially asking Pelosi and the incoming Democratic leadership to fundamentally alter the procedures of the House, where the majority rules absolutely and its leaders have ultimate say on what legislative proposals are considered.

She and the Democratic leadership would have the power to block Republican legislation, hamstringing large parts of Trump's agenda ranging from proposed new tax cuts to construction of a wall on the border with Mexico. "Unfortunately, our concerns were dismissed outright".

Between now and January, Pelosi will work the levers of power by doling out the many committee seat assignments, subcommittee chairmanships and other perks she is able to offer, or withhold, as incentives.
