World waits to see if Trump-Xi dinner brings trade peace

President Donald Trump was only a half-hour into his nine-hour flight to the G20 summit here in the Argentine capital when he chose to pull the plug on the most hotly anticipated moment of his trip: a lengthy face-to-face with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

With a rise in nationalist sentiment in many countries, the G20, which accounts for two-thirds of the global population, faces doubts over its ability to deal with trade tensions and other geopolitical differences among.

"We hope the USA can show sincerity and meet China half way, to promote a proposal that both countries can accept", Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told a briefing in Beijing. "We'll see", he said, speaking during a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

On the economic front, the G20 nations are expected to have exchanged views on other risks to the world economy, including the slowdown of China's economy, and US monetary policy normalization that could trigger an outflow of capital from emerging markets.

World leaders are gathering in Argentina for their annual G20 summit amid new tension with Russian Federation over Ukraine and a USA trade row with China.

In memory of the summit, the spouses of the leaders were also presented with bracelets made of silver mined in Argentina.

While the US, Canada and Mexico held a signing ceremony of their new trade pact on the sidelines of G20 summit, China and France held a joint press conference to demonstrate their commitment to reducing climate change.

Trump tweeted that in the wake of the seizure of Ukrainian ships and crews in the Black Sea by Russian Federation, it would be best for all parties concerned to nix the meeting.

The crown prince chatted with US President Donald Trump during the formalities, and had meetings with Narendra Modi, prime minister of India, where a number of commercial initiatives between the two countries were discussed. The two leaders were seated in chairs next to each other and there were no formal delegations arranged on either side.

He nevertheless described the Macri-Trump meeting as "extremely cordial" overall.

The Kremlin said it had not been notified and only learned about it from the tweet.

It's in these sessions that he's most likely to run across Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who most of the world has castigated after the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Macron and British Prime Minister Theresa May both said they were raising the killing of Khashoggi during meetings with the 33-year-old prince.

The Trump administration has come under certain fire for its perceived willingness to look the other way on the gruesome murder to maintain ties with a crucial Middle Eastern ally and big buyer of USA armaments. Persistent disputes with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau - including over U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs - led to questions about who precisely from the Canadian side would be doing the signing.

Speculation, however, is rife that the two leaders will not easily make concessions over trade issues, as Trump has continued his threats to take additional measures against China despite Xi's eagerness to resolve the ongoing trade dispute through dialogue.

Bin Salman told Macron not to worry, but Macron countered, "I am anxious".

Among the other leaders at the summit will be Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the focus of tensions over the murder of one of his prominent critics in October. Putin reportedly pulled out a pen and paper to sketch the skirmish in the meeting, Bloomberg reported.

Meanwhile, oil markets anticipated a bilateral meeting between Putin and Prince Mohammed on Saturday for a sign that Russian Federation will participate in a production cut by the OPEC oil cartel next month.

A Kremlin spokesman said Putin was ready to continue talks with Trump.
