Cops seek suitor who dropped engagement ring down NYC grating

The NYPD has put out an alert for a mystery couple whose romantic Times Square proposal went seriously awry when the engagement ring fell through a utility grate, beyond their reach.

Police say they hope someone can help track down the couple so that they can return their engagement ring.

WABC reported that the unidentified man tried proposing to the woman in front of 2 Times Square Friday but dropped the ring eight feet into a utility grate.

The Associated Press reports the couple asked police for help but left without giving their names or contact details when the diamond-studded sparkler couldn't be retrieved.

'Here's a photo of the ring our officers recovered (and cleaned!)' the tweet read.

He was so excited when she said yes he promptly dropped the ring down a grate underfoot. "Help us find them?"

The only problem: The NYPD is still searching for the couple. He has short brown hair and a manicured beard.

The New Year's Eve celebrations in Times Square attract over a million visitors from the USA and around the world every year.
