Dubai Sevens results: New Zealand face U.S. in final

The HSBC Canada Sevens, which will see the fourth edition run this coming March, was named Friday as Tournament of the Year on the ten-stop World Rugby Sevens Series for the 2017-18 season.

Defending champion South Africa lost to Argentina 17-12 in a thriller and still progressed to the Dubai Sevens rugby quarterfinals on Friday.

It took five minutes for the first try to come in a pulsating and energy-sapping final, Tone Ng Shiu powering through the clutches of Ben Pinkelman with Andrew Knewstubb adding the conversion for a 7-0 half-time score.

The Cheetahs, who are participating in 2018/19 World Rugby Sevens Series opening tournament on an invitation, faced a hard opening fixture against South Africa and the gulf in class was clear from the onset as they went on to concede five tries on their way to a 31-0 defeat.

The 2019 edition goes March 9 and 10 at B.C. Place. It was the Eagles' first time reaching the Dubai sevens final and thus their best finish in the prestigious season opener. "The boys put in an unreal shift, I'm really happy".

The Fiji Women's Sevens team have managed to avoid the wooden spoon for finishing last at the World Series tournament in Dubai, thanks to a 17-5 win over Kenya.

"Australia is one of the top teams in the world, and we [were] looking to go all the way, and so you know you're going to have to play those girls at some point in the day", said Landry.

Dan Norton of England became the first player in world series history to score 300 tries, with a 70-meter screamer against Canada. It has 56 tournament victories to the Americans' two. Barrett was then the hero, eventually crossing in the left corner after a chaotic finish, with the U.S. dummying at a penalty and feeding the ball out wide.

Baker was then sin-binned for an intentional slap down and Australia took immediate advantage, feeding the ball out left to Porch for his second try of the game.

Earlier Australia looked on course for the gold medal match after crushing England 27-12 in the quarter-final before losing after the siren to Canada 15-10 in the semi-final.

Fiji and South Africa will contest the fifth-place final.

The All Blacks Sevens topped their pool after wins over Wales, Spain and United States of America, setting up a quarter final against Scotland. Sam Pecqueur scored a try with seconds left for Scotland to trail by only 21-19, then Jamie Farndale appeared to touch down the victor, but it was disallowed because he stepped out of bounds.

Canada pinned New Zealand deep off the opening kickoff.
