Packers fans react to news of Mike McCarthy’s firing

Everyone knew something had to change with the Green Bay Packers and it looked likely Mike McCarthy would be fired at the end of the year, but after an ugly loss to the Cardinals, the Packers didn't wait and fired McCarthy on Sunday instead.

Sunday's 20-17 loss to the Cardinals - who entered the game with a 2-9 record - dropped the Packers to 4-7-1 and dealt a crippling blow to the team's chances of making the playoffs.

Sputtering Green Bay (4-7-1) has lost three straight and five of six. Fingers have been pointed at longtime head coach Mike McCarthy throughout the season as it seems the right plays are simply not being called. "As a result, I made the hard decision to relieve Mike McCarthy of his role as head coach, effective immediately", Chief Executive Officer Mark Murphy said in the statement.

McCarthy shook up his coaching staff, including bringing Philbin back as offensive co-ordinator and hiring Mike Pettine to replace Dom Capers as defensive co-ordinator.

Rodgers has played well although he has had much better seasons.

The Packers were hosting the Cardinals in Green Bay.

The Green Bay Packers likely needed to win out in order to make the National Football League postseason and Aaron Rodgers' team had what seemed to be an easy victory today. But the Packers' brutal season, along with playoff failures in recent years, sealed his fate.

"Yeah, a lot probably". We've had a number of opportunities. I thought we were ready for the game.

"We're just not executing well, it's the same things over and over", Rodgers said. "We all have a part in that and we've all picked our time to mess up a third down". Green Bay has talented weapons on offense, a solid offensive line, and an equally talented defense. Rodgers found Cobb for a 36-yard completion on third-and-11, but the play was wiped out by a holding penalty on right tackle Jason Spriggs.

"We did that! We did that", some emotional players yelled.

Rodgers said his focus was getting his teammates to "play with that pride" and focus on the next four games.
