Recruits react to news of Meyer's impending retirement

Ohio State says the 54-year-old Meyer is retiring from coaching and co-offensive coordinator Ryan Day will take over after the Rose Bowl.

The announcement is expected to come from Meyer at a news conference scheduled for 2 p.m.

Meyer has been the Buckeye's head coach for the past seven seasons. Smith denied a Football Scoop report last week that Meyer would not coach past the 2019 season and Day would take over as head coach.

Ohio State's season had five straight wins, including a rout of archrival MI that gave the Buckeyes another division title and a win over Northwestern in the Big Ten Championship. He has three national championships on his resume, including one with OSU in 2014 and two with Florida in 2006 and 2008.

Off the field, however, is a somewhat different story including the more than 30 arrests of players during his six seasons at Florida; to this past season where he was accused of covering up the situation with Smith, an accusation he denies.

Brown, who was hired to coach the Tar Heels last week after spending five years off the field, said Meyer's decision has put things into perspective for him. He fired assistant coach Zack Smith in the summer of 2018 when Smith's ex-wife filed a protective order after years of domestic abuse. "He was the most upfront coach that we had contact with, saying that if I worked hard I could earn a spot and how I needed to work for what I wanted there".

Added current Wisconsin head coach Paul Chryst of Meyer, "Obviously I have a lot of respect for what he's done".

Ryan Day went 3-0 to start the season as the Buckeyes' head coach, and while the opponents weren't noteworthy, that doesn't mean people weren't taking note of Day's approach and performance. The Buckeyes will play in the Rose Bowl against Washington on New Year's Day - Meyer's coaching finale.

With those issues came sudden health concerns, just as has happened at Florida, for Meyer.

"It was interesting because I've never had him as a head coach, so my first thought was, 'I wonder how this will work out?' but I definitely think he can do it", Murphy said when Day was named interim earlier this year. Since then, he's coached at Utah (2003-04), Florida (2005-10), and Ohio State (2011-18). Asked if he would definitely return to Ohio State next year, he answered, "Yes".

Outside of Alabama and Clemson, no other program has a better winning percentage than Ohio State since 2013. It appeared to be a dream job for the Toledo native and success quickly followed. His tally includes 11 bowl wins, the inaugural 2015 College Football Playoff among them. In April, the university extended it to 2022, upped his salary to $7.6 million with a built-in annual raise of 6%, AP notes.
