Browns fans are convinced Urban Meyer will be their next coach

His Buckeyes finished sixth in the final College Football Playoff rankings and were in contention for one of the four semifinal spots.

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer confirmed Tuesday that he will step down after the Buckeyes' Rose Bowl game against Washington on January 1.

Pressed further, Meyer then said he is "fairly certain" he will not coach again.

Offensive Coordinator Ryan Day is expected to take over as the Buckeyes' new full-time head coach. Meyer had been dealing with painful headaches due to a cyst on his brain. Meyer then retired again citing health issues and chose to move into a broadcasting career with ESPN. But with God, my family, and friends, I would like to announce that I am decommitting from The Ohio State University. The Wolverines came closest in the 2016 class, which was also the year Meyer signed a quarterback out of the DMV by the name of Dwayne Haskins Jr.

Both the 54-year-old Meyer's exit and Day's hiring are 180-degree opposites of the situation when Meyer was hired in 2011. The two men met and Smith told Meyer "he would pull the plug on this thing" if Meyer wanted to continue as coach, but Meyer said that he wished to resign. Perhaps just as important as all of that, Meyer never lost to MI.

"The decision was a result of cumulative events", Meyer said during a packed news conference. But he has nearly no head coach credentials.

When discussing the expectations at Ohio State, Day said the top one is to "win the rivalry game", followed by winning "every game after that". He has three national championships on his resume - one at Ohio State in 2014 and two at Florida in 2006 and 2008 - to go along with two undefeated seasons (2004 at Utah, 2012 at Ohio State). CFT had caught wind of speculation that it wouldn't be surprising at all if Meyer were not the Buckeyes' head coach next season, whispers that grew a little louder given the embarrassing loss in West Lafayette this and what some have described as Meyer's "anguished... emotional... erratic" sideline demeanor. He lost star defensive end Nick Bosa to an early season-ending injury, and the Buckeyes' defense never fully recovered. "I support Urban in his desire to step aside as head coach". I would also like to thank Buckeye Nation for supporting me throughout my junior season.

Day, 39, has had a 15-year coaching career in college football and the NFL but has never been a full-time head coach. Asked if he would definitely return to Ohio State next year, he answered, "Yes".

It appeared to be a dream job for the Toledo native.

But even before he announced his resignation Tuesday - ostensibly for health reasons - it was becoming increasingly clear that Meyer wouldn't be completing a contract that paid him $7.6 million a season and ran through 2022.
