Trump pays respects as president Bush lies in state in US Capitol

George Herbert Walker Bush, the 41st president of the United States, died November 30, and President Donald Trump has declared Wednesday a National Day of Mourning.

Under the soaring Capitol dome, office workers and tourists walked silently past a flag-draped casket that bore Bush's body.

Incumbent Presidents have delivered eulogies for the last three presidents that have died.

President Donald Trump is expected to attend the funeral on Wednesday at the Washington National Cathedral.

With Bush's casket atop the Lincoln Catafalque, first used for Abraham Lincoln's 1865 funeral, dignitaries came forward Monday to honor the Texan whose efforts for his country extended three quarters of a century from World War II through his final years as an advocate for volunteerism and relief for people displaced by natural disaster.

President Donald Trump will not speak at the funeral, sources with knowledge of the plans tell CNN, but has said that he will attend Wednesday's memorial.

Trump tweeted Wednesday that the day marked "a celebration for a great man who has led a long and distinguished life".

Bush's service dog, a young Labrador retriever named "Sully", also walked past the casket and sat near it briefly. Former President George W. Bush and his wife greeted the Trumps outside before everyone went in for the private, 20-minute visit.

Soon after he reached the height of his political popularity following the liberation of Kuwait, with public approval ratings that are the envy of today's politicians, the USA economy began to sour and voters began to believe that Bush, never a great communicator - something even he acknowledged - was out of touch with ordinary people.

"Year after year, post after post, George Bush stayed the course", McConnell said.

Fred Curry, one of the few African-Americans in line, is a registered Democrat from Hyattsville, Maryland, who voted for Bush in 1988, the election won by the one-term president.

During his four years in the White House, Bush ended the Iraqi occupation of Kuwait, steered the United States through the end of the Cold War and condemned China's 1989 crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators in Beijing's Tiananmen Square. The US economy slid into recession in 1990, and recovery was sluggish, conditions which contributed to his 1992 election defeat by Clinton.

Another photo shared Monday showed Sully with Bush family members before the president's casket was taken to Ellington Air Force Base.

"His character speaks most, because of his character, how he handled so many important points in our history".

"And as you look at the service that Sully provided to the president, we have great pride, but we are very sad as well", Miller said. USA traders also observed a moment of silence before markets opened on Monday in honor of Bush.
