Trump expected to name Heather Nauert as next UN ambassador

Heather Nauert, a former anchor and correspondent at Fox News Channel, joined the State Department as spokeswoman in April 2017.

Sources are indicating US President Donald Trump has made the previously-hinted-at decision to replace retiring United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley with foreign-policy newcomer Heather Nauert.

In addition to that role, Ms Nauert was appointed acting undersecretary for public diplomacy and public affairs in March this year.

Ms Nauert is said to be good friends with Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner.

ABC News reported in November that Nauert had been offered the job, but it was not clear at the time whether she had accepted.

Ms Nauert, a former Fox News presenter, has been spokeswomen for the US Department of Defence since previous year.

When she announced her decision to step down the president called her a "very special person" and said she had told him some months before that she wanted to take some time off.

Haley similarly had little foreign policy experience when appointed, although she had a national name as the governor of SC.

Nauert would take up the US mantle at the United Nations including holding sanctions on North Korea and defending Israel. Under her tenure, the USA pulled out of UNESCO and the Human Rights Council. Haley argued for a Cabinet-level post after, she said, initially being considered for the secretary of state job. He noted that "people were slightly denigrating about Haley too, because of her relative lack of experience and the general view is that she did quite well". More details will be added as they become available.

Two of Mr Trump's advisers have said he is weighing a number of other end-of-year staff changes, including replacing Chief of Staff, John Kelly.

"With Pompeo more firmly in control and Bolton focused on his anti-multilateral agenda, there's a sense the United States ambassador will have less clout", Gowan said.

"To be blunt, it's seen as a win simply that it's not Grenell", who is known to share Bolton's "pugilistic approach" to worldwide institution, Gowan said.

Haley has been the USA ambassador to the United Nations for the entirety of Trump's presidency.
